Videos shared on social networks show the magnitude of the 7.1 earthquake that shook central Venezuela this Wednesday, June 24. The images capture damage to buildings, strong movement in homes and the evacuation of people, while authorities evaluate the consequences of the earthquake, whose epicenter was located in the state of Carabobo.
The recordings capture the strong movement in homes, businesses and buildings, as well as scenes of people leaving buildings to get to safety. In some locations, material damage caused by the earthquake is also observed.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS, in English), the earthquake had its epicenter about 300 kilometers east of Caracas, in the municipality of Montalbán, Carabobo state.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 13.2 kilometers, which is why it was classified as a superficial earthquake.
After the earthquake, the United States Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami warning for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands due to the risk of changes in sea level.
The most recent history of an earthquake of similar magnitude in Venezuela occurred in 2018, when a magnitude 7.3 earthquake had its epicenter in the state of Sucre and was felt in at least 10 countries in the region, including Brazil, Guyana and several Caribbean islands.
Until now, authorities continue to evaluate the damage caused by the earthquake.
