The Mexican National Team achieved an unprecedented performance in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup by becoming the only team to win its three games without conceding a single goal. The Tricolor closed the first round with a perfect record.
Argentina was the only team that could equal that mark, but they conceded a goal at the close of the group stage against Jordan. With this, Mexico remained the only team with that achievement in this edition of the tournament.
The team led by Javier Aguirre added nine points thanks to their victories over South Africa, South Korea and the Czech Republic. In addition, he kept his goal undefeated during the three games played.
Mexico had not managed to get through the group stage without losing since Brazil 2014, when it advanced with two wins and a draw. Now he joins a short list of teams with plenty of wins and no goals conceded.
Before the Tricolor, only the Netherlands (1974), Brazil (1986), Italy (1990), Argentina (1998) and Uruguay (2018) had achieved that record. In all those cases, the teams reached at least the quarterfinals.
Spain also finished the group stage scoreless, although it did not match Mexico’s perfect pace. La Roja added seven points after drawing with Cape Verde and beating Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
The record fuels the Mexican fans’ hopes of breaking a long World Cup drought. The Tricolor has not reached the quarterfinals since Mexico 1986, a barrier that it will seek to overcome in this edition.
