With goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl JiménezMexico defeated without problems by 2-0 to Ecuador this Tuesday and advanced to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cupphase to which it returns after an early elimination in Qatar 2022 and in which he waits for England or Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Quiñones and Jiménez converted for the triwho maintained control of the game, even when the Ecuadorians had moments of lucidity, although they relapsed into their greatest deficiency: lack of aim in the area.
Driven by more than 80,000 fansthe Mexicans dominated in the first 10 minutes, in which they approached the area in a dangerous way on three occasions, one of them with a Raúl Jiménez’s header about to open the scoreboard.
Ecuador recovered and little by little broke the lock of four Mexican defenses. In the 17th minute he reached the area with a John Yeboah’s left-footed shot that hit the crossbar.
At 22 minutes, Mexico celebrated. Quiñones accepted a ball from Roberto Alvaradoescaped unmarked on the right wing and, patiently, paused before shooting from the right into the corner to put the 1-0.
Ecuador reorganized, but in the 31st minute it received a second blow. Jiménez put a wall on Quiñones, who assisted so that the player of the West Ham did the 2-0 with a shot from the corner.
Provocative, the Mexican fans insisted on the homophobic scream that they often repeat and that last May they had sung before the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantinowho today listened to the insult again without flinching.
In the second half, Mexico leaned back waiting for a counterattack and Ecuador attacked although without precision.
Mexico made an unsuccessful run on the right wing with Brian Gutierrezwho had replaced Gilberto Moraconverted tonight into the second youngest player to start in World Cup history at 17 years and 259 daysonly 20 days more than Pelé in Sweden 1958.
