The enabling of the new overpass on Roosevelt road and 9a. zone 11 avenue could be completed in July, according to the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (CIV) to Free press.
The work will directly connect the zones 11, 7 and 3 of the capital and promises to speed up mobility in one of the sectors with the highest vehicle load.
Before its next opening, the Metropolitan Transportation and Transit Regulatory Entity (EMETRA) is already outlining a series of road adjustments with the aim of relieving congestion and redistributing traffic in this key corridor of the city.
El Trébol, an overloaded highway distributor
The strategy proposed by EMETRA seeks to strengthen the connection between Western Inter-American Route and the Eastern Inter-American Routefacilitating the movement of motorists traveling from San Lucas, Mixco, Guatemala City and San José Pinula.
According to authorities, the main point of impact is The Cloverone of the most saturated road distributors in the capital, where four of the arteries with the highest vehicular flow converge: Roosevelt Causewaywith an average of 90 thousand vehicles per day; the Bolivar Avenuewith 68 thousand; the Aguilar Batres roadwith 80 thousand; and the Liberation Boulevardwith 135 thousand.
Roosevelt-San Juan overpass, a new alternative
In a recent episode of the podcast Uncensored Traffic, Hugo Godoyoperational director of the Municipal Traffic Police (PMT)explained that since the new Roosevelt-San Juan overpass will allow a direct connection between the zones 7 and 11in both senses, EMETRA It promotes a series of changes to “untrap” the sector and redistribute circulation towards alternative routes and not overload El Trébol.
Godoy explained that this new road will facilitate traffic for drivers who come from the transportation sector. CUM-USAC and surrounding streets, who will be able to join sectors such as The Verbena, La Madre Boulevard and the Peripheralor head towards the zone 3 and the sector El Trébol stadiumwithout having to go through the clover as a central connection point.
The alternative routes proposed by EMETRA
As part of the strategy to reduce the vehicular load on the main “road spine” of the city, EMETRA seeks to redistribute traffic to alternative routes and reinforce key connections that allow drivers to avoid high congestion points.
Among the connections that will become more important are:
- From the Roosevelt road to the Periféricounder the Cejusa bridge.
- From the 16 Carabanchel Avenue wave 9a. avenuepassing through CUMto connect with the 13 street of zone 11 and continue under the Aguilar Batres road towards zone 12.
- From the Roosevelt Causeway towards Plaza Mariachis and the Cemetery Avenue.
For those seeking to avoid passing through The Cloverauthorities also recommend using the 33 street and the 37 street in zone 8and in the future 40 streetas alternatives to connect to the zone 3 and colonies like Quinta Samayoa, Landívar, Kaminal and Villa Lindawithout having to use this distributor as a central point of the route.
For its part, Amílcar MontejoCommunications Director of EMETRAindicated to this medium that the authorization of the Roosevelt-San Juan overpass will allow this new road scheme to be launched, by directly connecting the zones 3, 7 and 11.
He added that the work will expand mobility alternatives and help reduce vehicle load in The Cloverone of the most congested distributors in the city.

The work, executed by the company CEBCOaccumulates a delay of 2 years and 9 months. The project started on September 1, 2022 and was scheduled to conclude on October 31, 2023.
However, in November 2023 The work was suspended after the convergence with a galvanized iron pipe that supplies water to zones 3 and 7 was detected, which forced its relocation.
Later, in June 2024construction was paralyzed again due to the non-compliance of the supervisory company, which did not present the extension of the required bond.
Finally, the construction was resumed in 2025 and, although there were delays in its delivery again, the project is now in its final stage.
With the opening of the new overpass on Roosevelt Causewayauthorities hope to reduce travel times and decongest one of the city’s busiest corridors.
