Guatemala registers 142 earthquakes in a week; the strongest reached magnitude 5.1

During the week of June 21 to 27he Guatemala Seismological Service of the Mariano Gálvez University record 142 earthquakesof which 110 were selected as relevant events, so the rest remain in the review process or were not included due to their low magnitude, their distance or both factors, it was reported this Thursday, July 2.

According to the official report, most of the seismic activity was associated with the subduction process of the tectonic plates off the coast of the Pacific Ocean, with events located off Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

In Guatemalan territory, the earthquakes linked to this process were recorded mainly in the departments of Suchitepéquez and Santa Rosa. Likewise, deep subduction movements—more than 150 kilometers deep—were detected in Jutiapa and in Mexican territory.

The bulletin also notes that continental intraplate seismicity occurred in Alta Verapaz, San Marcos, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala and Santa Rosawhile interplate activity was recorded in Quiché, Guatemala, El Progreso and Izabal.

The strongest earthquake

The largest earthquake during the week occurred on June 21with a magnitude of 5.1whose epicenter was located 61 kilometers south of Puerto San JoséEscuintla.

The event occurred at a depth of 29 kilometers and reached a instrumental intensity 3 in the municipality of Escuintla, according to the records of the Guatemalan Seismological Service.

The report includes maps and accelerograms that show the distribution of seismic activity and the behavior of the main earthquake, evidencing that the highest concentration of events occurred offshore, off the Guatemalan Pacific coast.

Although most of the movements were of moderate or low magnitude, the constant activity reflects the tectonic dynamism of the region, where the Cocos and Caribbean plates converge, one of the main sources of earthquakes in Guatemala.

The Seismological Service recalled that the monitoring of seismic activity is permanent and allows us to know the behavior of geological faults and the subduction zone, information that serves as support for the evaluation of seismic risk in the country.
