FIFA officially changed the authorship of the third goal with which Argentina defeated Cape Verde 3-2 in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.

During the official broadcast and in the first reports of the match, the score in the 111th minute was attributed to Cristian “Cuti” Romero, who played in the area a cross sent by Lionel Messi from a free kick.

However, the official match report determined that the ball changed its trajectory after hitting Cape Verdean defender Diney Borges before entering the goal defended by Vozinha.

With that review, FIFA recorded the action as an own goal by Borges in the 111th minute and removed the score from Romero’s personal account.

The play originated from a foul taken by Messi. The delivery found Romero inside the area and, after contact by the Argentine defender, the ball deflected off Diney Borges before entering the goal.

The rectification does not modify the result of the match, but it does modify the official statistics of the 2026 World Cup.

With that own goal, Argentina secured a 3-2 victory over Cape Verde and advanced to the round of 16, where they will face Egypt.
