A video circulating on social networks shows the moment in which a man allegedly shot two agents of the National Civil Police (PNC) during an identification procedure in the El Monolito neighborhood, in Los Amates, Izabal. The institution reported that the alleged attacker was arrested minutes later and later died from possible cardiac arrest associated with an alleged overdose.
According to the police report, the agents were responding to a complaint from neighbors about a man who allegedly threatened several people with a firearm. Upon locating him, they tried to identify him; However, the individual opposed the procedure and, according to the official version, pulled out a firearm and shot at the police officers.
The video shows when the agents approach the man and try to carry out the procedure. Moments later a struggle occurs and several explosions are heard.
The PNC reported that agent José Eliseo Chuá Raymundo was injured by a firearm projectile and was transferred to the Permanent Care Center (CAP) of Los Amates, where he remains stable under medical observation.
In addition, agent Gerber Javier Pérez López suffered a cutting wound to his right hand, allegedly caused by glass fragments. He received care at the scene and it was not necessary to transfer him to a care center.
According to the Police, the alleged perpetrator fled on foot towards the El Monolito neighborhood, where he was caught up and detained by agents who supported the chase.
Jorge Aguilar Chinchilla, PNC spokesperson, indicated that, after being brought to order, the man was transferred to a healthcare center, where doctors confirmed his death.
The police report states that the death was caused by a possible cardiac arrest related to an alleged overdose. This version corresponds to the preliminary information provided by the Police and must be confirmed by the competent authorities through forensic procedures.
At the scene of the attack, a firearm was located that, according to the PNC, had been used to shoot at the agents. The authorities reported that the brand, caliber and serial number of the weapon have yet to be established.
The Public Ministry must establish the circumstances of the attack and officially confirm the cause of the detainee’s death.
