During the morning of last Monday, July 13, the Ministry of Public Works of El Salvador assembled the pieces that will make up the fourth tower of the Metrocablea project that will connect the city of San Salvador with the municipality of Mexicansthe fifth most populated in that Central American country, located 8 kilometers from the capital.
According to The Graphic Pressone of the main printed and digital newspapers in El Salvador, these works are part of the advancement of the infrastructure of the cable transportation system, which seeks to improve mobility between San Salvador and Mexicanstwo of the municipalities most important of that Central American nation.
The government mobility project will be ready in the 2027 and will drastically reduce travel times between Mejicanos and the center of the Salvadoran capital. Therefore, with an investment greater than US$100 millionthe work will benefit about 200 thousand people and will reduce 45 minutes the travel time between both districts.
According to the Salvadoran president, Nayib Bukele“cable transportation systems were born as a solution to cities divided by topography”, so this idea gained a lot of strength in Latin America with experiences in Medellín (Colombia) and La Paz (Bolivia), and now El Salvador seeks to adapt it to its urban reality.
Metrocable in El Salvador
In San Salvador, the metrocable begins to take shape as one of the most important bets ambitious of the Ministry of Public Works of El Salvador to improve mobility between Mejicanos and the capital city. Therefore, the airline will have 23 metal towers 34 meters high and four stations along its route.
These stations are in an initial stage of construction and the route will pass to one side of the University of El Salvadorthe only public university in the country, and will reach Historic Center from San Salvador, with connection to the Ruben Darío streetrecently remodeled to facilitate access to the squares of the Salvadoran capital.

However, according to various Internet users, in recent days the work has become more visible due to the lifting of four towers, as part of the advancement of this first line, since authorities maintain that the cables and cabins are designed to resist winds and rainsa key aspect in an infrastructure of this type.
“Operational safety and continuity of service depend on structural stability and the maintenance permanent,” added the Ministry of Public Works of El Salvador, through a statement, where it estimates that the project will have a positive impact on nearly 200 thousand Salvadorans and will be able to move almost 40 thousand passengers a day.

In accordance with official projections, the route will allow connecting both points in just 15 minuteswhile in vehicle or by public transport that same trip could take more than an hour. Consequently, the investment to execute this mass transportation infrastructure exceeds US$100 million.
“In a regional context in which several cities are looking for alternatives to decongest saturated corridors, the Salvadoran project is part of a trend broader: integrating densely populated areas with high-capacity solutions, less land occupation and less dependence on the automobile,” concluded Nayib Bukele.
