The 2026 Apertura Tournament is about to begin and one of the teams that made the most noise during the transfer market was, without a doubt, Comunicaciones.
The white team undertook a profound restructuring after going through one of the most complicated stages in its recent history, marked by results very far from the demands of an institution used to fighting for titles.
The previous season was a real ordeal for the creams. In it Apertura 2025, Comunicaciones finished in the last position of the table, while in Clausura 2026 They fought for much of the regular season to avoid relegation. Although he secured permanence in the last round and then reached the semifinals of the tournament, the overall performance was far below the expectations of his fans.
The arrival of Chilean coach Marco Antonio “Fantasma” Figueroa represented a turning point. The strategist managed to rescue the team in the most critical moments and restore its competitiveness, but he also made it clear that there would be drastic changes. In fact, after the last home game of the previous tournament, he released a phrase that would mark the club’s immediate future:
“12 are leaving this team, because not everyone deserves to be on a team like Comunicaciones.” And the “Phantom” kept his word.
Comunicaciones became one of the most active clubs in the market by carrying out a profound renovation of its squad. In total, 17 players left the institution, most due to a technical decision. Added to these were the retirements of two historical figures: José Manuel Contreras and Rafael Morales, who ended outstanding careers with the cream shirt.
However, it is striking that, despite the large number of casualties, the club incorporated only seven players, so it will have a shorter squad than in previous tournaments. This could open the door for several youth players to have a more important participation, something rare during the last competition under Figueroa.
The challenge for Communications is enormous. The club’s demand is not only about qualify for the final phase, but to seriously fight for the championship again. The albos have not won a title since Apertura 2023, when they obtained their 32nd crown. If they fail to win this competition, the drought will extend to three years, an unusual situation for one of the most winning and popular institutions in Guatemalan soccer.
With a renewed squad, new reinforcements and the continuity of Marco Antonio Figueroa on the bench, Comunicaciones will face Apertura 2026 with the obligation to be the protagonist from the first day. The fans hope that the revolution undertaken by the “Phantom” will give immediate results and that the team will once again occupy the place that historically belongs to it: fighting for the top positions and the national title.
