The 2026 Apertura Tournament marked the official premiere of Football Video Support (FVS) in the National League. The system intervened in five actions during four of the six matches on the first day, with decisions that are already generating debate.
Not all stadiums in the championship have the necessary infrastructure to implement the system, as is the case with San Pedro FC. For this reason, teams that do not meet the technical requirements established by the National League will not be able to play home games in their own stadiums until they are adapted.
The FVS is an alternative to the traditional VAR promoted by FIFA. Unlike conventional video refereeing, it does not have referees in a review booth, but rather a technical operator who projects the replays for the central judge.
The system works through challenges requested by the coaches, who have two reviews per game. If the claim is unsuccessful, the team loses one of those opportunities.
The five interventions of the FVS on the first day
Antigua GFC 3-1 Marquense
- The most controversial intervention of the day. Javier Ledesma’s goal for Marquense in the 79th minute was subject to a review that was prolonged for more than seven minutes before being validated by referee Walter López generating discontent among players and fans. The delay made it clear that the system still needs greater agility to avoid prolonged interruptions in matches.
Municipal 2-0 Mixco
- The match with the most interventions of the day had two reviews with different decisions. The first at minute 60 confirmed the penalty awarded in favor of Municipal that Cristian Hernández converted to make it 2-0. The second at minute 74 ruled out a possible maximum penalty claimed by the Mixco coaching staff in what was an example of the different uses that the system can have in the same match.
Malacateco 1-1 Cobán Imperial
- In the 89th minute, the Malacateco coaching staff requested the FVS review for a possible foul inside the area on Nelson Andrade. After the review, referee Kevin Cacao ruled out the penalty and ended up admonishing Andrade himself for simulating the foul. in what was the most severe decision of the system on the opening day.
Suchitepéquez 0-0 Communications
- The expulsion of Mafre Icuté in the 82nd minute was subject to review at the request of the Suchitepéquez coaching staff. However, after the review, the referee ratified his decision and the Mazatec player had to leave the field, leaving the Venados with ten players in the final minutes.
In which games was the FVS not used?
- San Pedro FC vs. Xelajú MC: without interventions
- Aurora FC vs. Guastatoya: no interventions
The first day of Apertura 2026 made it clear that the FVS is here to stay in Guatemalan soccer but it also showed that the system still has room for improvement, especially in review times. The National League will have the challenge of fine-tuning the protocols to guarantee that the interventions are agile and do not interrupt the rhythm of the matches in the coming days of the championship.
