On a black bike with silver tires the story of Sergio Chumil, who at first took cycling as a way of having fun In his spare times, without imagining that years later that sport would lead him to be along with the best exponents in the world.

At 24, Chumil is part of the professional team Burgos Burpellet BH, in which he has had outstanding performances since his arrival, in 2024. That is why the Spanish team renewed him for two more years and in this year he has managed to respond with important and historical results.

“There are many things that I have happened in this 2025. I think it has been a good start of the yearwhere I managed to win a stage competing with my team Burgos and I hope that the rest of the year we do better, ”he said.

Among the memorable moments of the cyclist is stage that won in the O Great Camiño, played in Galicia, Spain, where she defeated Canadian Derek Gee. Victoria that he considers historical for his career.

“The races in Europe are very different from what had been accustomed in Guatemala. It is difficult to be able to run a race and let’s not say it; I think that It was a historical moment for me. I fulfilled a dream of winning an international career, I couldn’t believe, but I enjoyed it in the best way, ”he recalled.

From the countryside to Europe

Originally from Chuachalí, Tecpán Guatemala, Chimaltenango, Sergio combined his studies with agriculture, helping his father in planting vegetables and even working in a cafeteria, all this with the aim of contributing to the livelihood of his home.

While enjoying his first pedaling at age 13, Chumil, like many in this sport, made many sacrifices, Without taking his eyesight to fulfill his dream of being a professional cyclist, who has given his life a great turn in every way.

“Cycling has changed my way of living, seeing things and learning to value achievements no longer repeat the mistakes that are being made. I started as many. I studied and helped my dad in the field growing vegetables; I even worked in a cafeteria with my uncle while starting in cycling. They are things that marked my childhood and the beginning of my sports career,” he confessed.

Side with the best

In his first adventure in Spain with the Cortizo team, Chumil still ran like amateur, but he was demonstrating that he was small and aspired to more. That was how the Burgos BH joined his ranks as a professional and, in a matter of a season, Chumil He fulfilled another dream: to compete along with the best in the world.

“In my first season I saw something difficult. I knew that cycling was very different and, being in Amateur, I did not imagine that at the professional level it was so complicated to be participating among the greats of cycling. But I opened the doors and realizing that I could be running along with the biggest in the world,” he said.

Sergio Chumil went from watching the Slovenian Primoz Roglicto Colombians Egan Bernal and Nairo Quintanalike Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz, runners who have won the Tour de France, the Tour of Spain and the Giro de Italia, to have them as rivals on the road.

“It was a very motivating moment. Being there with cyclists who watched on television And he admired a lot and have the opportunity to be on par and compete against them was something that made me very happy and that reminded me of everything I had to go here; It’s something that motivated me a lot to move on, ”he said.

The Guatemalan cyclist lives his dream awake, something he never imagined; Now it is a reality. But he is with his feet on the ground, since he knows that he still has a lot to work and improve.

“Sometimes I don’t even think it. It was something that was not written and I never imagined that I could run in Europe and win a race. I turn to see my beginnings, and it fills me with satisfaction and nostalgia at the same time for having fulfilled this dream,” he recalled.

Back to Spain

Chumil could enlarge his legacy, since The Burgos BH team was confirmed to be in the Tour of Spain, one of the three great turns in the world. Although it is not in your hands to decide whether or not, but from its coaches, the Tecpaneco hopes to be present in the competition.

“I think that in Guatemala the whole fans want to see me compete, but I know how difficult it is, Because it requires a lot of preparation, since one is going to compete against the greatest in the world. I will continue working hard and I hope to achieve it and debut it in one of the three big turns ”he said.

Do not forget its roots

Despite his commitments to the Spanish team, Back to Guatemala always fills Chumil with happiness to be able to share with his family and occupies part of his time to go to roll with his cyclist friends.

“Guatemala is my country, I always get happy to come, Because this is where I started running and trained as a cyclist. Provided I have the opportunity to come, I share the longest time with my family and my friends, with those that I go to roll or simply have coffee to talk. ”

  • 2023: Champion of the Tour of Zamora, Spain, with El Cortizo.
  • 2024: National Route Champion in Guatemala. Stage winner in the Tour of Portugal with Burgos BH.
  • 2025: Third in the classic Camp de Morvedre, stage winner at the Great Carmiño with Burgos BH.
