The proposal by the Government chaired by Bernardo Arévalo de León was detailed this morning at a press conference by the Secretary of Communication, Santiago Palomo.
Escobar is currently the permanent representative of Guatemala before the hemispheric body, since it has been occupying since June 2024.
“Our Government decided to present the nomination of ambassador Claudia Escobar to the Deputy General Secretariat of the OAS for the 2025-2030 period,” Palomo said adding that the lawyer has the necessary merits for the position, which is currently occupied by the Beliceño Néstor Méndez.
According to the Secretary of Communication, Escobar is an ideal candidate for the position “for her commitment to the defense of human rights and their fight against corruption.”
The diplomat was elected in 2024 to preside over the Council of Legal and Political Affairs of the Permanent Council of the OAS and is also a notary with a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Barcelona.
A little over 10 years ago, Escobar became one of the representative figures of the fight against corruption in Guatemala, by publicly denouncing in 2014 that a deputy of the official party on duty wanted to bribe her, when he served as judge of the judicial agency.
The legislator was part of the patriotic party of former president Otto Pérez Molina (2012-2015) and sought an opinion in favor of the then vice president, Roxana Baldetti.
Due to the pressures of the case in question, for which deputy was sentenced to prison, Escobar had to leave Guatemala and was in exile for almost a decade.
The selection for the Deputy General Secretariat of the OAS will be held on May 5 in Washington. EFE
