Marking a milestone in Guatemalan and Central American medicine, Herrera Llerandi Hospital implements a bone marrow transplants program, under the direction of Dr. Jhohan Vásquez Díaz, hemato-outpiece with international certification in this type of procedures.
A bone marrow transplant is a medical procedure that replaces the sick bone marrow, especially in cases of acute leukemia. It is performed through two modalities: allogene transplants, which use a related healthy donor, and autologous transplants, which allow the administration of high doses of chemotherapy by infusion of hematopoietic stem cells of the patient himself.
This procedure also applies to the treatment of various hematological diseases, including aplastic anemia, acute lymphoid leukemia and myeloids in remission, Hodgkin lymphomas and non -Hodgkin in relapse, multiple myeloma in response and teoplasias typlasias Tesicular germinals in relapse.

The Herrera Llerandi hospital has established itself as the first private center in the region to make these transplants, already reaching, nine successful transplants, two alogenic and seven autologists, also thanks to a highly specialized multidisciplinary team.
Alogenic refers to the use of stem cells of a related donor, usually a brother. Autologous, on the other hand, implies the use of patient’s own stem cells, collected and previously stored for subsequent infusion.
The transplants are carried out in a “bubble” room, a sterile environment with hepa filters and continuous extraction of contaminated air, the only installation of this type in Guatemala.

The process takes place in six key stages:
- Primary evaluation to determine the type of transplant and evaluate the general state of the patient (infections, mental health and nutrition).
- Donor selection in alogenic transplants.
- Mobilization and harvest of stem cells.
- Conditioning chemotherapy.
- Infusion of stem cells.
- Monitoring of the effects of treatment and recovery of the function of the bone marrow.
The Herrera Llerandi hospital has a clinical laboratory and blood bank accredited under the ISO15189: 2012, Hemato-Oncologists with vast experience and a support team that includes pneumologists, infectologists, vascular surgeons and psychiatrists, all with the necessary certifications to guarantee excellence at each stage of the process.
Herrera Llerandi Hospital reaffirms his leadership in high complexity medical care in Guatemala. This milestone represents a step forward in the hospital mission of offering advanced health services, combining cutting -edge technology with an exceptional human team, to provide hope and quality of life to patients and their families.
