Guatemala City lives this Sunday a true sports party with the traditional 21K race, which brought together more than 20 thousand national and international corridors in an atmosphere of enthusiasm, music and color. From the early hours of the morning, the streets were filled with athletes and families that accompanied the test, consolidating this half marathon as one of the most important events in the country.

The capital mayor, Ricardo Quiñónez, headed the day and stressed that the 21K is not only a competition, but a meeting point for thousands of Guatemalans who find in the sport an opportunity for well -being and unity. “Today we celebrate a career that is already tradition, which inspires and demonstrates that our city can house world -size events,” he said.

During his speech, the mayor said that 21K has become a reference in the region and that every year more international corridors join the challenge. He also highlighted the effort of the organizers, volunteers and sponsors, who made it possible for the 2025 edition to develop in complete normality and with international quality standards.

Amid the enthusiasm for the half marathon, Quiñónez took the opportunity to make a historical announcement: the first marathon in Guatemala City will run in 2026. The event will take place within the framework of the 250 years of the city.

The mayor assured that the marathon will be a legacy for the city and that will place Guatemala in the International Calendar of the 42 kilometers. “It will be a unique opportunity to show the world the best of our people, our history and our organization capacity,” he added.

The 2026 marathon will run the same day that the 21K is traditionally held, which will allow the capital to house two high level tests on the same day: the half marathon that is already tradition and the complete 42 -kilometer test, which will debut with great expectations.

In addition, Quiñónez said that the event will have cutting -edge technology, reinforced security and spaces so that families can live the experience as spectators. He also mentioned that the arrival of elite athletes, tourists and amateur corridors from different countries is expected, which will have a positive impact on the economy and the projection of the city.

With this announcement, the Municipality of Guatemala reaffirms its commitment to citizen sport and well -being, while preparing to celebrate a historical date with an event that promises to become tradition. The 21K once again demonstrated that the city was filled with joy to the rhythm of athletics, and in 2026 it will also do it with its first official marathon.
