Wet weather and possible rains will accompany runners of the 21K in the capital

The traditional 21K Marathon of the City of Guatemala will be held this Sunday, August 31 in the middle of a warm and humid atmosphere, with the possibility of rains during the afternoon, according to the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh).

According to the official forecast, the entry of moisture from the Pacific Ocean, favored by a low pressure system, will generate partially cloudy sky in much of the country. Although during the first hours of the day there are no rainfall in the capital, the rains could occur in the afternoon, accompanied by electrical activity, especially in the center and south of the country.

The Insivumeh also warned about the possibility of severe local storms, with a strong wind and possible hail fall in high areas, so it recommended caution during the development of the event and in the return of the participants to their homes.

The race will begin at 7.00, leaving from 7th Avenue, next to the Municipal Palace. Traffic restrictions will be applied from 6,00 hours in different areas of the city, which will be gradually released as runners advance.

The tour includes emblematic points such as Plaza España, the Obelisk, the reformer’s tower and several avenues in zones 1, 4, 9, 10, 13 and 14. Between 8.15 and 8.45, some areas are expected to be expected – as Martí Street, from the route to the Atlantic to the peripheral, and the 18 street of zone 1 in the direction of the National Palace of Culture – are already enabled for circulation.

Key recommendations for runners and citizenship

  • Plan in advance: Use alternative transport such as Uber or peripheral routes.
  • Avoid setbacks: Check the estimated road reopening schedules, which will start at noon.
  • Take care of your health: Keep well hydrated, eat light and wear clothes and footwear already tested.
  • Prevent accidents: be attentive to possible rains in the afternoon, which could affect the visibility and surface of the route.

It is estimated that the last corridor cross the goal around noon and that the disassembly of the infrastructure concludes at 3 pm. The authorities ask for collaboration from neighbors and motorists to maintain order and support road safety during this sporting event.
