A new landslide was recorded this Thursday, October 9, at kilometer 24.6 of the CA-1, highway to El Salvador, and left two soldiers from the Humanitarian Rescue Brigade of the Guatemalan Army trapped, Conred reported.

The elements were participating in the work of removing debris when a new mass of earth fell away and partially buried them, as they were trapped in the machine on which they were working. Emergency teams managed to rescue them alive and transfer them to the Military Medical Center, where they are reported in stable condition, with minor injuries.

“The area is too unstable due to the weather. Unfortunately there was another landslide while the machinery was working, and two elements were trapped between the equipment. Thanks to God and everyone’s efforts, we managed to rescue them,” explained Eddy Monzón, commander of the Unified Command Post and member of the Departmental Municipal Firefighters.

The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) reiterated that the instability of the terrain and the constant rains prevent passage in that sector.

Pedestrian and vehicle restrictions remain in force, and the population was asked not to expose themselves to risk.

As a preventive measure, the authorities ordered the removal of heavy machinery from the affected area.
