A month ago, in the state of Illinois, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began the so-called operation Midway Blitzwith the supposed objective of detaining “undocumented criminals.”
This is part of the President Donald Trump’s planwho promised, at the beginning of his second term, that would increase mass deportations in different US cities.
However, in the city of Chicago there has been a negative reaction from local communities, who have reported that ICE not only has detained several migrants in an arbitrary and abusive mannerbut has used various methods to intimidate the population.
One of the tactics reported by residents is the use of vehicles as helicopters and equipment such as tear gas and intense lights.
This was reflected on September 16, when residents of the city of Elgin stated that a ICE helicopter “prowled” around the citywhich culminated in a raid on a local home.
The residents reported that the immigration agents broke down the door of the house to gain entry, in addition to surrounding it with military vehicles and using smoke bombs.
This fact was also documented by media such as WBEZ and NBC Chicago.
Without court order
In the city of Des Plaines, located in northwest Illinois, complaints have been filed about the use of force by ICE to detain not only undocumented people, but also to American citizens.
As an example is the case of a US citizen who would have been detained along with his father. ICE agents They would have shot him three times with a taser.
Some complaints, submitted to the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC), indicate that ICE has arrested people without having a court order.
They also accuse ICE of using undercover agents in plain clothes, plus stun grenadess to neutralize the detainees.
Another action by ICE that has generated fear among the inhabitants of Illinois are the immigration raids that are carried out in school hours and in educational centers, mainly in the Funston area.
