The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) chose singer and songwriter Sara Curruchich, a Kaqchikel Mayan artist from Guatemala, to write and perform the official anthem of the World Food Forum 2025.
The event, which will be held from October 10 to 17 at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, commemorates the organization’s 80th anniversary and is estimated to bring together more than 10,000 participants from around the world—including youth leaders, activists, heads of state and representatives of the private sector—under the motto “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future.”
The World Food Forum (WFF) is FAO’s main global platform dedicated to driving the transformation of agri-food systems through youth, science, innovation and investment.
In its 2025 edition, the event will be organized into three pillars: the Global Youth Action Forum, the Science and Innovation Forum, and the Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum.

According to the FAO, the official anthem is Freedom Germina and they classify it as a song that sows hope that Sara Curruchich composed and performed especially for the occasion.

The song was written in Kaqchikel, Spanish and English, is available on digital platforms since Thursday, October 9, and combines ancestral sounds with contemporary arrangements. In addition, it will be performed live during the opening and closing ceremonies of the World Food Forum, in addition to accompanying the main sessions of the event during the week.
During the World Food Forum 2025, Sara Curruchich will be in Rome from October 10 to 17 and will offer several presentations with Moty, her bandmate and percussionist, in different official activities of the Forum.
Sara Curruchich: An indigenous voice at the heart of FAO
According to the organization, the election of Sara Curruchich represents a historic recognition of indigenous peoples and their role in the construction of sustainable agri-food systems.
Born in Chixot (San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala), into a farming family, Curruchich grew up learning the sacred relationship between humans and the earth, the cycles of corn, and the value of reciprocity with nature.
His family grows corn and beans using traditional practices, and his sister—an agricultural engineer—works on food sovereignty projects from an indigenous perspective. This direct connection with the land inspires much of his work and artistic commitment.
