The president of the United States, donald trump, promotes a strategy to renew public administration and attract Generation Zamid a drop in support among young voters, a key segment ahead of the November 2024 legislative elections.
Under the motto of “make government cool againHowever, this turn coincides with a drop in the popularity of the Republican among the ‘zoomers’ or ‘centennials‘, that is, Generation Z, born between the end of the 1990s and the beginning of 2010.
Generation gap in public employment
The initiative, promoted by the Office of Personnel Management, OPM— seeks to “make the Government ““cool” again” by incorporating recent graduates and young professionals into federal agencies.
Kupor, who titled the plan ‘Making Government Cool Again’. This will initially focus on incorporating Generation Z talent in key areas such as finance, human resources, engineering, project management and public procurement.
According to the director of that office, Scott Kuporonly 7% of federal employees are under 30 years old, compared to about 22% in other economic sectors. If this trend continues, he warned, the Government runs the risk of falling behind the dynamism of the labor market.
The program proposesselect candidates based on their skills and demonstrated talent, without prioritizing the origin academic wave experience prior, in an attempt to modernize access to public service and make it more attractive for young people.

Contrast with previous cuts
This strategy contrasts with the policies applied at the beginning of Trump’s second term, when cuts were promoted in the public administration. Under the direction of the entrepreneur Elon Muskat the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) -, personnel and contract reductions were promoted with the aim of reducing federal spending.
Between January 2025 and January 2026, the federal workforce recorded the departure of 386 thousand 826 workers, according to official data, which shows a significant reduction in the size of the Government in that period.
Fall in support among young people, the reason for the change
The shift towards recruiting young people coincides with a deterioration in the image of the representative between the Generation Zalso known as centennials or digital natives.
According to a survey by the YouGov firm for the magazine The Economistaround the 67% of young people disapprove of Trump’s managementwhile only one in four supports it.
This level of support represents the lowest among all age groups and marks a historic low since his return to the White House in 2025. A year earlier, similar polls showed support greater than 50% among young people between 18 and 29 years old.
Analysts cited by American media point out that the Generation Z It is a volatile electorate, but decisive in the configuration of majorities in Congress. In that sense, the behavior of these voters could influence the political balance in Washington during the second half of the presidential term.
