The Children’s Shelter shared information in which it detailed that on April 8, the Criminal Sentencing Court with Specialized Jurisdiction in the Crime of Human Trafficking of Guatemala sentenced Cirilo Soto Peña to 16 years and 6 months of incommutable prison.
He added that the sentence was handed down for the crime of paid sexual activities of minors.
During the criminal process, authorities established the responsibility of the now convicted person, who at the time of the commission of the crime, in 2018, worked as a psychologist at the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) and, during three different therapeutic sessions, committed the aforementioned crime against three adolescents between 15 and 17 years old, who were survivors of human trafficking, according to the Children’s Shelter.
He stated that the convicted man, who carried out the therapeutic sessions by court order, used his position and trust to violate the survivors, when they were sheltered and under protective measures.
“The Children’s Shelter supported the case as a supporting plaintiff,” he highlighted.
As dignified reparation, the Court established measures of satisfaction and compensation in favor of the victims, as well as guarantees of non-repetition, he indicated.
“This case illustrates how, on many occasions, a person responsible for protection and care becomes an aggressor and responsible for the violation of rights,” he noted.
The Children’s Shelter considers that it is an exemplary sentence and reiterated the commitment to work on behalf of children and adolescents who are victims of the worst forms of violence.
