Legal actions target Bernardo Arévalo in the process of electing attorney general

No less than 23 legal appeals and complaints are processed in different instances regarding the work of the nomination commission for attorney general, according to the monitoring platform of Guatemala Visible.

Shares increased from the current monthwhile the commission was moving towards the integration of the list of six candidates.
Several amparos were presented in the Constitutional Court (CC). Some question the participation of judges as candidates for attorney general. However, no judge advanced between the 12 eligible.

Four amparos question with different arguments the aptitude of President Bernardo Arévalo to elect the next attorney general. These actions have been promoted by the Foundation against Terrorism (FCT), Giovanni Fratti and Fernando Linares Beltranena.

Linares points out as “a real and imminent threat to the constitutional order” that “legitimacy of origin” of Arévalo for “the cancellation of the match that brought him to power, which would affect the validity of his actions.”

Commissioners speak out

The FCT has also filed several complaints. On April 19, he took action against the secretary of the commission, Patricia Gámez, and against the deans Julio Cordón, of the Rafael Landívar University; Pablo Maldonado, from the Universidad del Istmo and Luis Ruano, from the Mariano Gálvez University.

The complaint indicates the alleged influence of Gámez on the other commissioners to guide their vote in the integration of the payroll. During the session, before beginning the election of the candidates, Gámez and the academics rejected the accusation.

Maldonado indicated that in an illegitimate manner “they seek to coerce this commission.” “We do not allow our reputation to be tarnished, much less allow our work in the commission to be coerced,” he added.

The foundation had already denounced several commissioners for alleged violations by allowing judges to participate. However, no judge advanced to payroll integration.

Several candidates also managed protections in claim for low grades that the postulator granted them.
