Videos show how tourists defy the ban and are exposed to the eruption of the Santiaguito volcano

Videos published on social networks show how a group of tourists approached the crater of the Santiaguito volcano, in Quetzaltenango, and show the risk to which they were exposed due to a strong eruption, since it is one of the most active colossi in Guatemala, its behavior changes suddenly and its ascent is restricted.

In one of the recordings it is observed how, due to the eruption, an extensive column of smoke and large amounts of pyroclastic material rise, which can be lethal due to the strength and size of the rocks that usually break loose at that moment.

In another video, taken from a different angle, you can see how the group of tourists rushes down to safety. It is currently unknown if the incident left anyone injured.

The incident occurred while the prohibition on climbing the Santiaguito volcano is in force, due to how dangerous it can be to approach its crater.

Tourist Assistance of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (Inguat) published on its social networks that Santiaguito is not suitable for tourist promotion, since its activity can change in minutes.

“Respect the restriction and avoid tragedies,” explains Tourist Assistance.

Furthermore, Inguat reiterates the permanent call to national and foreign visitors to refrain from ascending volcanoes that represent risks to their physical integrity, especially in those cases where there are alerts or adverse conditions.

Likewise, tourists are urged not to be surprised by informal or irresponsible guides who, without complying with the corresponding safety and regulatory conditions, endanger people’s lives.

“INGUAT supports the actions promoted by the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction and the corresponding municipalities, within the framework of their legal powers, aimed at the prevention, control and protection of the population against risks associated with volcanic activity,” says the agency.

“The Santiaguito volcano is highly dangerous. Its ascent is prohibited by the authorities. Its activity is unpredictable and can generate ash emissions, toxic gases and pyroclastic flows capable of causing deadly avalanches. Do not put your life at risk, your life is worth more than a photo. Do not expose yourself! If someone offers to guide you on the ascent of the volcano, be wary,” are part of the Tourist Assistance recommendations.
