Who are the new vice ministers of Culture and Sports in Guatemala?

The Ministry of Culture and Sports (MCD) announced, through a statement published this Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the swearing-in of new authorities who assume two vice ministries of the portfolio.

The document makes official the appointments of Rossina Cazali as Deputy Minister of Cultural and Natural Heritageas well as that of Ricardo José Alvarado, appointed vice minister of Sports and Recreation.

In addition, the career of both professionals in their respective areas stands out: Cazali, as a curator and museum expert, as well as a national and international researcher; and Alvarado, as a university professor with experience in sports managementin the preparation of the National Sports Policy 2025-2040 and in the development of programs to strengthen physical culture and the inclusion of people with disabilities.

“With these appointments, the MCD reaffirms its commitment to consolidating management aimed at strengthening the institutional framework, protect and value cultural heritage, expand access to culture and physical recreation, and promote the comprehensive development of the Guatemalan population”says the document.

The new appointments were made by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Luis Méndez Salinaswho took office 15 days ago.

Rossina Cazali, Deputy Minister of Cultural and Natural Heritage

  • Curator, researcher and promoter of contemporary art in Guatemala and Latin America, with more than three decades of experience.
  • He has dedicated himself to research, analysis, documentation and the development of critical thinking.
  • Throughout his career, he has developed projects in museums, biennials and academic spaces in Latin America and Europe.
  • She has been honored with a Guggenheim fellowship and the Prince Claus award.
  • His experience includes training new curators, managing cultural projects and promoting research spaces.

Ricardo José Alvarado, Vice Minister of Sports and Recreation

  • Professional in Physical Education, Sports and Recreation, with postgraduate training in e-learning Management and Production and more than a decade of experience.
  • He has dedicated himself to university teaching, as well as institutional analysis and the design of strategies for the transformation and growth of the national sports ecosystem.
  • He has been director of the National Council of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Conader), the Guatemalan Paralympic Committee and various national federations.
  • He has been responsible for multi-year planning, optimization of technical programs and attracting international cooperation.
  • He has represented Guatemala as head of mission in international events and has promoted national policies aimed at inclusion and sustainability.
