The Colombian cyclist Cristian Camilo Muñoz Lancheros, protagonist of the Vuelta a Guatemala 2025 after being the protagonist of stages and wearing the leader’s jersey for several days, died this Friday, April 24, due to medical complications derived from an accident suffered in Europe.
The 30-year-old rider from Boyacá had suffered a fall in competition in France with his current team Nu Colombia. Although he was initially treated for a knee injury, days later his health condition became complicated due to a bacterial infection detected during a medical evaluation in Spain.
The accident occurred on the Tour du Jura. After initial care, his condition evolved unfavorably, despite the efforts of the medical staff, which ultimately led to his death.
His recent passage through Guatemala left an indelible mark. Muñoz was one of the great figures of the Vuelta a Guatemala 2025, where he not only won stage victories, but also led the general classification for seven days and defended the leader’s jersey with authority.
The Colombian completed his performance with a creditable third place in the general classification, which consolidated him as one of the most outstanding runners and loved by the Guatemalan fans.
Nu Colombia confirms death
The Nu Colombia team confirmed his death with an emotionally charged message:
“Today we say goodbye to Cristian Muñoz, a cyclist who turned each kilometer into an example of passion, discipline and heart. His story does not stop here and reminds us that dreams are pedaled every day, even when the route goes uphill,” they wrote in a message shared on the team’s social networks.
“We are left with his example, his goals achieved and the inspiration he left in each person who saw him get on the bike. To his family, friends and those who admired him from near or far, we send all our strength and affection at this moment,” the message concluded.
As a sign of mourning, the team announced its withdrawal from the Vuelta a Asturias. During this competition, a minute of silence was held in his memory, on a day in which the Guatemalan cyclist Sergio Chumil also participated.
Born in Ventaquemada, Boyacá, Muñoz was one of the Colombian runners with a career in national and international cycling.
His journey in the world of cycling included steps in teams such as UAE Team Emirates between 2019 and 2021, as well as processes in Coldeportes Zenú, EPM-Scott and, since 2024, in Nu Colombia.
