They reveal video of Maradona’s body in court and revive debate about his medical care

The second trial for the death of Diego Maradona experienced one of its most shocking days this Wednesday, April 22. In the San Isidro courts, the prosecution presented a 17-minute video showing the star’s body hours after his death, on November 25, 2020 in Tigre. The images caused his daughter Gianinna, present in the room, to cry.

The doctor Juan Carlos Pinto, who signed the death certificate, described that Maradona was “very edematous, with his face and limbs swollen. He looked like a balloon”to show that his physical deterioration was visible days before his death. Deputy Commissioner Lucas Farías stated that the room did not have conditions for home confinement. “I saw it as a normal room, not as a treatment place”he declared.

The trial, which began on April 14 after the annulment of the first trial due to a scandal involving a judge who secretly recorded a documentary about the case, jseven health professionals are prosecuted for simple homicide with possible intent, accused of negligence in the medical care of Diego Maradona. Among the accused are Leopoldo Luque, Agustina Cosachov and Carlos Díaz, who face sentences of 8 to 25 years in prison. They all maintain their innocence.

The most striking statements

This Thursday, April 23, Luque denied having been Maradona’s treating doctor and assured that he did not participate in the medical treatment.. “The nurses did not report to me. I was not the owner of Diego’s health as they say,” stated the neurosurgeon. However, during the hearing, an audio from doctor Nancy Forlini addressed to psychiatrist Cosachov was played, where she was directly identified as responsible for monitoring the patient, contradicting Luque’s version.

Gianinna, the daughter of Diego Maradona, who testified days before in the trial, stated that Luque had manipulated her in a way “absolute and horrible” to convince her and her sisters to opt for home confinement after surgery. The prosecution, for its part, has described the medical team as a “improvised group” who knew the star’s health history, which included cirrhosis, an enlarged heart, neurological deterioration and addiction to alcohol and psychotropic drugs.

Fernando Signorini, Maradona’s physical trainer between 1983 and 1994 and a personal friend of the star, asked that justice be allowed to work without external influences. “Everyone took a position due to the influence of the media; some have already been convicted or others have been acquitted. Diego would have demanded justice,” he expressed forcefully.

A process that will last until July

The video of Maradona’s body beyond the image captures is not available to the public. Justice prohibited official broadcast cameras from capturing the recording during the hearing, protecting the dignity of the deceased and the integrity of the judicial process.

The second trial includes some 120 witnesses and two weekly hearings, so it is expected to last until at least July of this year, when it will be known whether the seven health professionals will face sentences of between 8 and 25 years in prison for the death of the 1986 world champion.
