lahar alert
Due to the rains, the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) issued a newsletter in which it warns about a lahar in the Tambor River, a tributary of the Samalá River.
“The rain on the Santa María Santiaguito volcanic complex is currently generating the descent of a lahar in the bed of the Tambor River,” says the Insivumeh.
Authorities say the lahar is weak to moderate in nature, likely to rise in the next few minutes, in addition to transporting water, fine sediments, trunks and branches.
The Insivumeh also indicated that the lahar will produce vibrations in the ground that will be recorded at the seismic stations near the river bed.
“The possibility of descending more lahars in this or any other of the channels of this volcano“says the authority.
