This Sunday, Xelajú MC sealed its ticket to the semifinals of Clausura 2026 with a 2-0 victory over Marquense at the Mario Camposeco Stadium, closing the series with a 3-1 aggregate that left no doubt about the superiority of the Superchivos throughout the two games.
The goals came in the first thirty minutes of the match with a long shot by Steven Cárdenas in the 19th minute that surprised goalkeeper Javier Colli and a penalty converted with precision by Yair Jaén in the 28th minute. in what was a forceful performance by Roberto Hernández’s team in front of their fans at the Mario Camposeco.
The match had Xelajú as the dominant team from the beginning despite the multiple yellow cards that complicated the development of the game in the first minutes. The opening of the scoreboard at 19 with Cárdenas’ long shot broke the balance and changed the panorama of the series definitively, since Marquense needed to overcome the 1-0 deficit in the first leg and with the 2-0 on aggregate the mission became practically impossible for the Lions. Jaén’s penalty in the 28th minute sealed the game and the series before the break in what was a very productive first half for the Superchivos.
In the second half, Xelajú managed the advantage intelligently while Marquense tried to react without success. The expulsion of Elvi Elington in the 75th minute left the Leones with ten men and made the Superchivos’ defensive work easier in the final minutes. It is worth noting that Xelajú faced this match with Estuardo Chang between the three sticks as the third goalkeeper, after the injury of Rubén Darío Silva due to a ruptured Achilles tendon and the last-minute loss of Nery Lobos, with Chang responding effectively by deactivating a one-on-one by Diego Casas in the 35th minute.
Xelajú to the semi-finals
With the classification confirmed, Xelajú MC completes the table of the four semifinalists of Clausura 2026 along with Comunicaciones, Municipal and Mixco. The Superchivos will face Comunicaciones in the semifinals with the first leg on Thursday, May 7 at the Cementos Progreso Stadium, in what promises to be one of the most attractive duels of the phase with coach Roberto Hernández facing the team he led in the Apertura 2025 before arriving in Xelajú.
Mario Camposeco proved once again to be a strength for the Superchivos, who had the unconditional support of their fans despite the rain that fell on the city of Quetzaltenango during the match.
With the Clausura leadership and the support of its people as its main arguments, Xelajú reaches the semifinals with the motivation to continue advancing towards the title that would give the club its eighth moon in the National League.
