New head of the MP, Gabriel García Luna, calls on prosecutors and staff to work with “ethics”

The new Attorney General, Gabriel García Lunaaddressed a message this Monday, May 18, to the administrative, technical and fiscal staff of the Public Ministry (MP).

In his message, he assured that his management will seek to regain internal trust and strengthen the functioning of the investigative entity.

The official stated that decisions on promotions, transfers and labor relations must respond to criteria of capacity and ethics, and not to personal ties, political loyalties or conveniences.

It also offered institutional support to personnel who act with integrity, as well as access to tools, resources and continuous training to improve the performance of prosecutors, technicians and administrative workers.

García Luna assured that his management will not be conducted from an isolated office and that he will listen to the prosecutor’s offices, technical units and administrative areas to identify needs and improve processes.

Furthermore, he warned that ethics will not be optional within the MP and assured that each clean investigation, each case resolved objectively and each victim treated with dignity will be part of the process to restore citizen confidence in the institution.

He said that a well-integrated team litigates and serves Guatemalan citizens better; Furthermore, whoever works with integrity will have the support of the institution. Whoever does not do so will face the consequences established by law, in a fair, transparent and without exceptions manner, not as retaliation, but as part of the functioning of a serious institution.

He added that the challenges are great, but no challenge is impossible when an institution works with conviction.

Prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche was at the activity, but did not give statements to the press.

This Monday, at the entrance to the MP building, a tent that was used for security personnel was removed, now leaving freer access to the premises.

Gabriel García Luna took office on Sunday, May 17, replacing Consuelo Porras, who led the MP for eight years.
