On January 22, 2026, Pope Leo XIV signed the decree that recognizes the “martyrdom” of the Guatemalan Franciscan friar Augusto Rafael Ramírez Monasteriomurdered “out of hatred for the faith” in Guatemala in 1983, and who will be proclaimed blessed soon.

Fray Augusto, as he was known, exercised his ministry until the November 7, 1983the day he was murdered.

Friar Edwin Alvaradorector of the temple of San Francisco El Grande, commented in an interview with Radio María that beatification is by way of martyrdom and not by miracles.

During the interview he confirmed that it will be on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Florencia farm, at 10 in the morning. “There are expectations for this activity and the letter has already arrived where the cardinal of the Cause of Saints is available to come to Guatemala,” he comments.

An additional letter from Guatemalan authorities to Rome is missing for complete confirmation of the event and a press conference is scheduled to give more details of the event. There are other activities related to the beatification such as a special mass to bless the stoles of those who will participate in the beatification and a mass that will be celebrated on the anniversary of his ordination as a priest.
