Will “Moyo” Contreras continue in Communications? The cream idol could take on a new role in the club

José Manuel “Moyo” Contreras ended his time as a player after the elimination of Comunicaciones against Xelajú MC in the semifinals of Clausura 2026. The historic midfielder closed a golden period with 12 titles won and the recognition of becoming one of the top idols of the cream club. Although he is retiring as a player, in the Communications environment there is already talk of a possible new role within the institution.

The possibility of Moyo continuing to be linked to the club as a basic forces coach or in an administrative position has gained strength in recent days. His career, leadership and knowledge of the cream philosophy make him an important figure for the future of the team. For many fans, seeing him outside of Comunicaciones would be difficult to imagine after more than a decade defending the cream camisole.

The midfielder’s retirement was also marked by controversy with coach Marco Antonio Figueroa. The Chilean assured that Contreras was not training normally due to an injury and explained why he stopped calling him at the close of the tournament. “I didn’t come to pay tribute to anyone, I came to save Comunicaciones from relegation. Player who runs plays, player who doesn’t run doesn’t play”Figueroa declared at a press conference.

The relationship between the two became even more strained when the coach revealed that Moyo announced his retirement without previously communicating it to the coaching staff. “He never came to the dressing room to talk to me,” Figueroa commented about the historic cream player.

An uncertain future for Communications

The continuity of Marco Antonio Figueroa in Communications also generates uncertainty. The Chilean coach announced that up to 12 players will leave the squad and left open the possibility of leaving the club. “Maybe I’m the 13th who leaves, because sometimes all this is tiring,” declared in conference.

Meanwhile, Moyo Contreras’ future within the institution has not yet been officially confirmed. Although there is talk of a possible position in the basic forces or in the administrative area, the club has not yet issued any statement on the subject.

Both the future of Figueroa and Contreras will be key issues heading into Apertura 2026. Communications will have to rebuild after a season that went from fighting to avoid relegation to being eliminated in the semifinals.
