Manuel Neuer will once again defend the goal Germany in a World Cup. The historic goalkeeper was included this Wednesday in the official call presented by coach Julian Nagelsmann for the 2026 World Cup. thus marking his return to the national team at the age of 40.

The Bayern Munich goalkeeper will head a list that mixes experience and youth, with regular figures such as Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz.

The squad also includes some surprises, such as Mainz midfielder Nadiem Amiri and Bayern Munich’s young talent Lennart Karl.

Nagelsmann explained that the decision to call back Neuer was taken after several conversations within the coaching staff.

“We decided that the three best goalkeepers in Germany should be in the World Cup. That’s why we spoke with Manuel to find out if he was willing to return,” said the German coach.

In addition, he confirmed that Neuer will arrive at the tournament as the starting goalkeeper. “We count on him as number one,” he added. The call-up of the experienced goalkeeper had generated debate in Germany, especially due to the situation of Oliver Baumann, who had been a starter in the team’s last games.

The third goalkeeper called up is Alexander Nübel, while Jonas Urbig will work alongside the group during training, although without being officially part of the list.

In defense, names like Antonio Rüdiger, Jonathan Tah, Nico Schlotterbeck and David Raum stand out. However, Nagelsmann clarified that Rüdiger will start the tournament as a substitute.

In midfield, one of the main doubts revolved around Jamal Musiala, who is still looking to regain his best level after a major injury that kept him out for a good part of the season.

“We hope he gets back to his old self. But even at 80 percent, Jamal is still one of the best players in the world,” Nagelsmann said.

Germany will arrive at the 2026 World Cup looking to regain international prominence after several disappointing performances in recent tournaments, including its elimination in the group stage at Qatar 2022.
