The Augsburg Cathedral Choir is one of the most prestigious children’s choirs in Germany and cultural ambassador of the diocese and the city of Augsburg. He performs in concert halls and churches around the world, including the Vatican, Japan, Canada, South Africa, Spain, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Belgium and China, among other countries.
Since 2024, the choir has been part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Bavaria, as one of the “Four Bavarian Children’s Choirs”. The repertoire ranges from Gregorian chant and Renaissance music to contemporary works.
The chamber choir of the Augsburg Cathedral Choir will offer several concerts in the country, some open to the public. One of the highlights will be the concert at the National Palace of Culture, in Guatemala City, on the occasion of the beginning of the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of German immigration to Guatemala, where he will perform together with the National Choir of People with Disabilities “César Augusto Hernández”, created in 2023.
The program combines motets—short compositions for singing in churches, regularly formed on words from Scripture—, from Bach to Mendelssohn, with compositions from a Guatemalan context, such as the Bomb Massby Pedro Bermúdez (1558-1605), which builds a musical bridge between two continents.
The national choir will perform tunes by Moses Hogan (Hear My Prayer), Heinrich Isaac (black tears) and Felipe de Jesús Ortega (Ancient).
The Choir of the Augsburg Cathedral arrives in Central America at the invitation of the German Embassy in Guatemala City and will embark on a concert tour in the coming days. In addition to the concerts, the choir will participate in religious services and perform, among other places, in Antigua Guatemala and San Antonio Aguas Calientes.
The program is complemented by cultural activities, such as a visit to the Mayan ruins of Iximché, near Tecpán, and a traditional weaving workshop. In addition to the presentations, the visit seeks a meeting with the local population.
