Although the initial report from the traffic authorities this Monday, June 1, points to moderate retentions, the beginning of the work week and school routine will test the vehicle load in the Roosevelt Causeway.
He partial closure for the works of new overpass will remain active until next Saturday June 6and traffic authorities warn that the real impact will depend strictly on the peak hours and of external factors.
The Ministry of Communications, through the Social Solidarity Fund (FSS), reported that the restriction responds to the work on the access ramp of the project in the sector.
Closing data
- Affected point: closure of the entrance crossing to the 9a. zone 11 avenue from the Roosevelt Causeway (heading east/El Trébol).
- Restriction hours: every day of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m..
- Period: from last Saturday, May 30 until Saturday June 6, 2026.
PMT report
Amílcar Montejo, spokesperson for the Municipal Traffic Police (PMT) of Guatemala City, explained that currently there are breaks of approximately 2 to 5 minutes due to the stoppage of the line in the right lane towards 9th. zone 11 avenue.
However, on one of the most saturated roads in the city, These minutes have variations and the panorama can change drastically throughout the day due to three factors:
He impact depending on time: A 3-minute mid-morning stop may be manageable, but during the afternoon rush hour, when the flow toward the Oriente and El Trébol peaks, That funnel in the right lane can multiply wait times to 20 or 30 minutes late.
Saturation of alternative routes: As 9th Avenue is blocked, traffic is forced to look for 5th Avenue, along the El Guarda market sector, or 12th avenue. As they are commercial and internal areas of the Roosevelt neighborhood, these streets do not have the same capacity and they tend to have funnels momentary.
Weather and unforeseen events: The eventual rains of the season or any vehicle with mechanical failures on the narrow detours will completely paralyze the vehicular incorporation, even affecting the center lanes of the road.
Alternate routes
To avoid getting stuck in the right lane line heading east, the PMT recommends the following options:
- 5th avenue (El Guarda Market): It is the immediate detour for those heading towards the commercial sector of zone 11. It is suggested to travel with patience due to the high pedestrian activity in the area.
- 12 avenue (Roosevelt Colony): It functions as an alternate section prior to entering the residential sectors, avoiding the critical point of the work.
If your usual route is crossing from Mixco to the capital and traveling during busy times, of 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.consider using major alternative routes such as San Juan Causeway wave Mariscal Avenue to avoid the section of Roosevelt under repair.

Work with delay and accumulated sanction
Since its inception in 2022, the Roosevelt Causeway overpass construction project has faced multiple setbacks that extended its deadlines.
In November 2023, engineers found pipes and an underground collector not recorded in the plans, which forced the structural design to be modified.
In June 2024, the work was suspended again due to lack of bond from the supervisory company, which had to review the physical progress according to the payments made to the construction company.
The work was paralyzed and was reactivated in April 2025, after a protection granted by the Constitutional Court. However, although the delivery date was scheduled for December 22, 2025, the construction company did not meet that deadline and began to accumulate a fine.
Six months later, until mid-May 2026, the work is 95 percent complete. Although there is no defined date for its inauguration, the Ministry of Communications indicated this Monday, June 1, that it will be in the short term.
