Rubio addressed the questions regarding the second electoral round in Colombia, scheduled for June 21, and stated that the US will work to ensure “free and fair elections.”
Questions about this matter arose after the outgoing president, Gustavo Petro, denounced irregularities in the vote counting of the first electoral round on May 31, in which the lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella prevailed.
“We are going to be very forceful in guaranteeing that there is a fair and free election in Colombia and we will everything in our power to make it happen,” Rubio stressed.
Rubio’s statements came after Donald Trump will address the electoral campaign in Colombia and expressed his support for De la Espriella, whom he described as “someone intelligent, strong and determined.”
