The Municipality of Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez published this June 9, 2026, a new regulation that transforms the city’s on-street parking system, which now incorporates 24-hour road assistance services and preventive surveillance. The new regulations also establish new rates, benefits for neighbors and frequent visitors, and penalties for those who use regulated spaces without paying.
The regulation is called the Municipal Service Regulations for Safe Parking on Public Streets and Road Assistance of Antigua Guatemala, and was published in the Diario de Centro América.
According to the publication, the saturation of the vehicle park in the colonial city “makes the modernization, control and regulation of parking on public roads imperative” and added that the regulation should not be limited to charging for physical space, but rather evolve towards a comprehensive public service of mobility and road safety.
What does the new service consist of?
The Municipal Service Regulations for safe parking on public roads and road assistance of Antigua Guatemala will be applicable throughout the jurisdiction of Antigua Guatemala, and according to this, the payment made by users will not only allow the use of spaces enabled for parking on streets and avenues, but will also activate complementary services of minor mechanical assistance and surveillance coverage by the municipal security forces.
The regulations also establish that payment of the fee is voluntary and only applies to those who decide to park their vehicles in authorized spaces. In addition, it clarifies that the Municipality does not guarantee the availability or reservation of a specific space, since these will be assigned according to the order of arrival of users.
Road assistance and surveillance
The new regulations incorporate 24-hour road assistance for situations such as battery charging or minor mechanical damage. The service will be available within the municipality and will be activated automatically once the corresponding payment has been made.
A preventive surveillance system is also contemplated through permanent patrols of the Municipal Police (PM) and the Municipal Traffic Police (PMT) in the areas enabled for parking. The regulation states that this surveillance has a preventive and dissuasive nature, aimed at the general protection of the environment.
What if there is any theft or damage to the vehicle?
Although surveillance measures are incorporated in the regulations, the commune expressly establishes that the payment does not constitute a deposit, custody or insurance contract for the vehicles. Therefore, the Municipality will not assume responsibility for robberies, thefts, damages, fires, collisions or any other damage that may be suffered by vehicles or the objects that remain inside them.
However, in the event of incidents, the municipal administration indicates that it will provide administrative support and collaborate with authorities through monitoring systems and cameras when available.

CC had suspended collection
On May 20, 2026, The Constitutional Court (CC) provisionally suspended the collection of the MarbEx system in Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, after resolving to temporarily revoke articles 1 and 4 of the regulations that regulate payment for parking on public roads, judicial sources reported this Wednesday, May 20.
The resolution established the provisional suspension of two articles of the “Regulation of income for temporary private use of public roads for the parking of vehicles”, which was approved by the Council of Antigua Guatemala in the session documented in minute 104-2024, of September 2, 2024, and published in the Central American Newspaper on November 20 of the same year.
With that decision, the MarbEx charge was temporarily suspended, so neighbors, workers and tourists will be able to park in permitted areas without making the payment established by the municipality.
The suspension also temporarily voided traffic fines related to non-payment of the system.
The tariff scheme established charges of Q10 for vehicles and Q5 for motorcycles from Monday to Thursday. On Fridays, weekends and high-traffic days, rates increased to Q20 for cars and Q10 for motorcycles.
