Yemeni Civil Defense authorities confirmed the death and reported that rescuers faced “exceptionally difficult conditions” during the operation, due to the crater’s steep terrain and intense heat.
The “Spiderman of Yemen” was famous on social media for videos in which he appeared descending into craters and climbing rock walls without ropes or safety equipment. In most cases, he did it to the rhythm of the music he heard on his inevitable headphones.
International media also highlighted that the Tourists who visited the place used to pay him small amounts of money to carry out his risky climbs, activity that constituted their main source of income.
The death of the climber generated shock in Yemen and reopened the debate about security measures in that popular tourist and geological destination.
The Damt crater, located about 220 kilometers south of Sanaa, the Yemeni capital, is one of the best-known geological sites in the country. It is about 100 meters deep and contains thermal mineral waters rich in sulfur, heated by geothermal activity.
Authorities and geologists had already warned about the danger of approaching the edges of the Damt crater, because, although the volcano is inactive, its steep rock walls and the high temperatures generated by underground thermal processes continue to represent a risk.
