Under the light of the stars and from one of the cradles of art in the country, the Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Center, the Guatemalan film director Jayro Bustamante will present his most recent production in Guatemala City, Fire Mountain Range.
With a cast made up of Guatemalan talent and indigenous communities who joined this acclaimed audiovisual production, the film mixes science, art and one of the country’s best-known phenomena: volcanoes.
Fire Mountain Range It is presented as the fifth film by the acclaimed director, recognized nationally and internationally for productions such as Ixcanul (2015), Tremors (2019), The Llorona (2019) and Rita (2024), with which he has brought the name of Guatemala to international stages.
This film, which mixes drama, action and magical realism, brings back one of the most prominent Guatemalan actresses, María Mercedes Coroy, who plays a volcanologist who fights corruption in her country while trying to save communities at risk.
As part of the cast, figures such as Juan Pablo Olyslager, María Telón, Willian Toc, Tatiana Polomo and Jonathan Shitamúl, among other actors, are part of this story that reflects two perspectives of the same problem: for some, the emergence of a new volcano is a threat; For others, it becomes a business opportunity.
the movie Fire Mountain Range It delves into the reality of natural phenomena. According to the synopsis, the production addresses the moment when a new volcano forms within the Fuego mountain range, a fact that could change everything for the communities that surround this place.
For its national premiere, the production explained to Prensa Libre that the film incorporates a historical context of the country: the eruption of the Fuego volcano in 2018, when the colossus released pyroclastic flows over several villages located on its slopes. The incident left thousands of people dead or missing, as well as extensive material damage.
After its premiere in Santiago Atitlán, Jayro Bustamante brings his film to Guatemala City in an open-air cinematographic experience that will bring together the public, the cast and the crew responsible for the production under the sky of the Open Air Theater of the Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Center.
