In seven weeks of validity, Q1 thousand 394 million 461 thousand 974 of the fuel subsidy, according to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), which represents around 70% of the total approved.
The subsidy became effective on April 28, 2026 and its reports and payments were defined on a weekly basis. As of June 15, the seventh week was completed, in which the amount of the subsidy was Q188.9 million, according to data from the entity.
The weekly average to that date is around Q200 million. Meanwhile, on Monday the 22nd of this month the eighth week was completed, which is still pending payment.
If the rate of consumption continues, the subsidy funds would be exhausted around week 10 (during the first week of July), as advanced by MEM authorities in previous months.
The subsidy is paid per gallon and, according to Decree 11-2026, covers Q8 for diesel and Q5 for premium and regular gasoline, for a period of three months or until the approved amount of Q2 billion is exhausted, whichever occurs first.
They foresee a drop in prices
Regarding the behavior of fuel prices in the country, derived from the negotiations and progress in the agreements between the United States and Iran, the Vice Minister of Energy and Mines, in charge of the hydrocarbons area, Erwin Barrios, indicated that, if the conditions reflected until now are maintained, a slowdown could be observed in the rate of increase in national fuel prices.
A gradual downward trend is even expected, as a result of the reduction in pressures on international oil prices, the official added.
In this regard, he explained that this derives from the evolution of the conflict in the Middle East in recent weeks, which generates more favorable prospects for international energy markets, since the normalization of export flows through the Strait of Hormuz and greater availability of oil in the world market is expected.
National trend
The price of fuel in the country fell again, marking the third week with this behavior. Diesel decreased by Q2.95 per gallon, and remained at Q27.30 for the final consumer, according to the MEM reference prices for Guatemala City, in self-service mode, during the week of June 23 to 29.
The gallon of regular and premium gasoline fell by Q1.71 and remained at Q32.14 and Q31.14, respectively.
Meanwhile, the reference prices at the terminal (Ex Rack) remained at Q29.37 for a gallon of superior gasoline, Q28.37 for regular gasoline and Q24.53 for diesel.
Although the MEM authorities had mentioned that they were analyzing options to target the subsidy for the transportation of food cargo and public transportation of people, if an expansion is necessary, to date no proposals have been presented by the Government or Congress.
