Historic comeback by Sergio Chumil to be crowned two-time champion of the Guatemalan National Road Championship

Sergio Chumil starred this Sunday in one of the most impressive comebacks in Guatemalan cycling. The Burgos runner Burpellet BH was proclaimed champion of the National Elite Road Championship after reversing a disadvantage of more than eight minutes and 40 seconds.

With 50 kilometers to go, the escape seemed to have the race completely under control. However, the tecpaneco began a spectacular chase and began to close the gap kilometer after kilometer.

With the support of other runners and a constant pace, Chumil was reducing the gap until he joined the leading group with just four kilometers left in the competition.

In the end, the Guatemalan defended his position and crossed the finish line as the new national road champion. The comeback, lasting almost nine minutes in just 50 kilometers, remained one of the most memorable in national cycling.

With this victory, Chumil revalidated the title he won last year and became two-time national road champion. In addition, days before he had also won the time trial of the same championship.

The podium was completed by José Canastuj, from the ECA Seguros Bantrab team, in second place, and Wilson Chonay, from Team Hino One La Red Suzuki, in third position. The double title confirms Chumil as the great reference for Guatemalan cycling today.
