Belgium staged a memorable comeback and sealed its qualification to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup by defeating Senegal 3-2, in a dramatic match that was decided in extra time. When everything seemed lost for the Europeans, they reacted in the final minutes and changed the course of the game.

Senegal was superior for much of the match and took the lead with a goal from Habib Diarra, in the 25th minute, which reflected the dominance of the African team in the first half. Later, Ismaila Sarr increased the difference in the 51st minute and made it 2-0, bringing his team closer to qualifying.

However, Belgium found the reaction as the clock neared the end. Romelu Lukaku scored within a minute 86 and rekindled the hope of his team. Just three minutes later, Youri Tielemans scored the equalizer at 89 and sent the game to extra time.

In extra time, both teams looked for the decisive goal. Senegal tried to overcome the emotional blow, while Belgium took advantage of the momentum of the comeback to secure the victory and passage to the next round.

The outcome came with a penalty in favor of the European team, taken by Youri Tielemans, who scored the final 3-2. Thus, Belgium completed one of the most outstanding comebacks of the tournament and advanced to the round of 16 after beating a combative Senegal team.
