The Egyptian National Team qualified for the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup by defeat Australia 4-2 in the penalty shootout, after drawing 1-1 during the 120 minutes of regulation and extra time, in a match corresponding to the round of 32.
The match was played from start to finish. Both teams generated scoring chances in search of qualification. Egypt took the lead with a score from Emam Ashour, but Australia tied the score and took the match to extra time.
During extra time, neither team was able to break the tie. The defensive solidity and the interventions of both goalkeepers kept the score at 1-1 until the end of the 120 minutes.
The classification was defined from the penalty spot. Egypt converted four of their shots and Australia scored only two, so the African team secured its place in the round of 16.
With this victory, Egypt was among the 16 best teams in the tournament and will now face a new challenge in the round of 16, where its rival will be the team from Argentina or Cape Verde.
