“26 years. Nice.”
With that brief message published on his social networks, Erling Haaland celebrated his 26th birthday on July 21. Just two words, accompanied by a photograph with a Viking helmet during his vacation, were enough to commemorate the date.
But behind that apparent simplicity begins a very different stage in the Norwegian forward’s career.
After scoring seven goals in five games during the 2026 World Cup, Haaland left behind one of the few doubts that still accompanied his career: proving that he could also respond in the most important competition in football.
The conversation changed. At 26 years old he will no longer be evaluated solely by the records he breaks, but by the legacy he manages to build.
The age at which questions change
The careers of great scorers are usually divided into two stages.
The first is marked by discovery. Each season confirms talent, records of precocity appear and comparisons with other figures seem inevitable.
The discussion revolves around potential: how much it can grow, how many titles it will win or if it will be able to dominate an era.
The second begins when that potential stops being a promise. From that moment on, the questions change.
It no longer matters only how many goals a footballer scores, but for how long he will be able to continue doing so.
The history of football shows that the initial explosion is rarely enough to define a career. What distinguishes great figures is the ability to sustain excellence for a decade or more.
Haaland has just reached that point.
The World Cup changed the conversation
For years, one of the main criticisms of the Norwegian striker was his absence in major national team competitions.
The 2026 World Cup changed that perception.
His seven goals in five games confirmed that his scoring ability could also be transferred to the most demanding stage of international football. More than a number, that performance represented the closing of a debate.
Today the questions are different.
A generation that has already taken over
The change of stage does not only affect Haaland.
Kylian Mbappé, just a year older, is already experiencing that transformation. World champion, protagonist of another World Cup final and consolidated as one of the main figures in European football, he stopped being evaluated for his potential some time ago.
Today the debate revolves around how many Ballon d’Ors he will win, how many more titles he will add to his record and what place he will occupy when the history of this sport is written.
Exactly the same thing is starting to happen with Haaland.
His career will no longer be measured solely by next season. It will be measured by the size of his legacy.
The most difficult rival does not wear another shirt
Comparisons with Mbappé will continue to mark the conversation of this generation. References to Cristiano Ronaldo will appear every time scoring records are discussed.
However, Haaland’s real adversary is not another striker. It’s time.
Cristiano Ronaldo represents the best example of that second stage. At the age of 26 he was already a world figure, but many of the goals, titles and recognitions that ended up defining his legacy came later.
His career shows that reaching the top is just the beginning; staying in it for more than a decade is what distinguishes the great legends.
That is the challenge that the Norwegian now faces.
Much more than a birthday
Anniversaries usually invite us to look back.
Haaland’s proposes exactly the opposite.
Youth records are already part of its history. The World Cup finished consolidating his status as an international figure. What begins now is the stage that no forward can accelerate with his speed or solve solely with his talent.
When he published “26 years. Nice.”Haaland summed up his birthday in just two words.
Football, on the other hand, is beginning to write a much longer chapter.
Because from the age of 26 it is no longer measured how much talent a scorer has.
The place it will occupy in history is beginning to be measured.
