Carlos Mérida is one of the pioneers of abstract art in Guatemala and in the 1940s caused controversy. His work will be presented temporarily in Antigua Guatemala.

The National Museum of Art of Guatemala, (Munag), in the Royal Palace of the General Captains, in Antigu Carlos Mérida (1891-1984).

Mérida is considered the great Guatemalan muralist. His work is characterized by geometric abstraction with intense and flat colors and well -delineated contours. It was also interested in Mayan pre -Hispanic art and the human figure. Some of its murals are in the buildings of the Civic Center of the City of Guatemala.

He lived in Paris where he looked for aesthetic solutions in the French avant -garde. It was Pablo Picasso who introduced him to Parisian intellectual circles, which allowed him to friendship with plastic artists such as Kandinsky, Klee and looked.

The exhibition will be for three months and includes photographers, as well as works that tell the life story of the outstanding artist.

The Ministry of Culture and Sports shares that preventive and healing actions were carried out for the conservation of the Mérida collection. Mérida’s legacy had been sheltered without giving them a conservation process for more than 25 years.
