Pre-reconciliation calls

This Sunday’s message is not the first. The past March 28, Palm Sunday, Maduro and Flores had already urged peace and national unity after a court hearing in New York, in what was their first public statement since their capture.

On that occasion, they assured that they remained “firm and calm” in the face of the legal process.

Judicial process in the United States

Maduro and Flores remain detained in the United States after being captured on January 3, 2026 during a military operation in Caracas. Both were transferred to New Yorkwhere they face a judicial process for crimes linked to drug trafficking and other federal charges.

In March, a federal judge refused to dismiss the case, allowing the process to continue in US courts.

Four charges against Maduro and similar accusations for Flores

According to the accusation, the former president would have headed a criminal structure designed to facilitate the shipment of large quantities of drugs, using State resources and in coordination with drug trafficking networks.

For its part, Cilia Flores is also included in the same court file and faces charges related to drug trafficking conspiracy, international drug trafficking and crimes linked to the use and possession of weapons, within the framework of the same federal investigation.

Political and diplomatic context
