Xelajú MC, Municipal, Deportivo Mixco and Comunicaciones are still in the race and are two games away from qualifying for the final. The enthusiasm remains and the fight for the title enters its highest point. The tournament will have a new champion, after Antigua GFC, the current two-time champion, was eliminated.
The stage is left open for playoffs that are usually defined by details: a stopped ball, a minimal error or a decisive save. The semifinals anticipate close series, with teams that will not give ground and fans that will live every minute “on the edge of their seats,” said the former player.
With the four best teams in this phase, the margin for error is minimal. This is what former Guatemalan soccer player Byron Pérez considers, who analyzed the panorama heading into the semifinals:
“They are difficult and exciting games. The four best teams, the most consistent in the championship, remained. The keys are well defined. I think that Municipal has it a little less complicated, while Communications He has it more difficult against Xelajú. It will be a very even series and will be decided by minimal details,” Pérez added.
The phrase summarizes what is to come: two keys with different stories, styles and moments, but with the same objective: to reach the final.
Communications vs. Xelajú — historic clash with closing at the Mario Camposeco
The first match pits two traditional Guatemalan soccer teams against each other. Communications and Xelajú have experience in decisive instances. In this series, the creams will open at home and the closing will be at the Mario Camposeco stadium, a factor that adds pressure.
Pérez considers that the emotional aspect favors Communications: “Communications is going to take advantage of the emotional moment that is happening. They took off the pressure of relegation and are on the rise in football and mental terms. Fifteen days ago, no one took for granted that the creams would reach these levels.”
That momentum could be decisive if they gain an advantage in the first leg, since it would force Xelajú to take risks in the return leg.
Even so, the former player recognizes the consistency of the Quetzaltecan team: “At the moment, Comunicaciones is a slight favorite, although Xelajú is a good team; the goats are one of the most consistent in the championship; they were leaders in the regular phase,” mentioned the former attacker.
Regarding the casualties, Pérez warned: “However, for this first game they have important absences that the creams can take advantage of,” said Pérez.
Municipal vs. Mixco — experience versus proposal
The other key pits Municipal, a usual protagonist in these phases, against Deportivo Mixco, which has stood out for its tactical order. Although Municipal starts as a favorite, the league usually punishes excesses of confidence.
“Municipal is an 80% favorite against Mixco due to history and knowing how to play this type of game. It has a better team and its stadium weighs a lot for the other teams,” Perez indicated.
He also valued Mixco’s style: “I like Mixco’s team because of how it plays, but I think it won’t be enough to eliminate the reds.”
The closing of the tournament points to close matches with few goals: “They are going to be close games; there won’t be many goals. Visiting teams come out cautiously and generally defend themselves… This is normal in these instances.”
Pérez summarized the key: “I believe that the teams that advance to the final will be the ones that make the least mistakes and take advantage of their opportunities. The finalists will be there.”
For his part, the Antigua GFC coach, Mauricio Tapia, pointed out that all teams maintain the same chances of reaching the final, although he avoided delving into which ones could qualify. The avocado team was eliminated from the national competition in the quarterfinal round, after losing to Comunicaciones.
Four teams, one title
With Antigua GFC gone, Clausura 2026 will have a new champion. Xelajú and Comunicaciones star in a historic series, while Municipal has an advantage over Mixco due to experience and home field. Now it all comes down to details: concentration and efficiency. In the semi-finals, the mistake is paid for.
