This Thursday, May 7, the official draw for the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship took place at the Concacaf headquarters in Miami, Florida. The event defined the three groups that will compete in Mexico from July 24 to August 9 in search of qualification for the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
The 12 participating teams were distributed into four pots according to the Concacaf Under-20 Ranking. Guatemala, which achieved direct qualification to the tournament after placing among the six best teams in the ranking as of October 2025, was placed in Pot 2 along with Panama and Cuba. The draw determined that the Chapina team led by Sebastian Bini will face Mexico, Costa Rica and Antigua and Barbuda in Group B in a group stage that promises high competitiveness.
The tournament will serve as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be held in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, marking a historic milestone as it is the first time that the tournament has been jointly organized by two countries from different confederations (UEFA and AFC). In addition, the regional championship will grant a ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games for the champion of the competition.
This is how the groups were:
- Group A: United States, Cuba, El Salvador and Haiti
- Group B: Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Antigua and Barbuda
- Group C: Honduras, Panama, Canada and Jamaica
The teams that reach the semifinals of the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship will automatically ensure qualification for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup. This means that Guatemala must finish among the first two places in its group to advance to the next phase and stay alive in the World Cup race.
The tournament champion will also obtain direct qualification to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. In the event that the United States—already classified as the host country of the Olympic Games—wins the regional competition, the Olympic quota will be awarded to the runner-up.
Guatemala will face a major challenge against Mexico, current champion of the tournament after beating the United States 2-1 in the final of the 2024 edition, and Costa Rica, one of the traditional powers of Concacaf in minor categories. The full match schedule, host cities and stadiums will be confirmed in the coming days following the conclusion of the official draw.
