Aycko Bourdet debuted on the Gymnastics World Cup circuit this May 7 in Varna, Bulgaria, and in his first international appearance in this category he managed to qualify for the final of the floor event with a score of 13.300, positioning himself among the best gymnasts in the world in a competition that brings together more than 100 athletes from 30 countries, including world-class figures such as the British Max Whitlock, three-time Olympic champion.
The result exceeds the expectations with which Bourdet arrived in Bulgaria. The young Guatemalan had acknowledged before the competition that his main objective was to gain experience and continue learning in the international elite. “It’s my first World Cup and I feel a little nervous, but motivated. My goal is to gain experience and continue learning, beyond seeking a medal,” expressed the athlete.
Bourdet’s participation in the Varna World Cup is part of his preparation for the most important commitments of the year for Guatemalan athletics. The young gymnast’s calendar includes the Pan American Championships in June and the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 in July.
A final that excites Guatemala
Bourdet’s qualification for Saturday’s floor final is an achievement that goes beyond the sporting result. The Guatemalan thus becomes one of the few Guatemalan athletes to compete in a Gymnastics World Cup final, in a discipline where the country has been growing steadily in recent years under the direction of Argentine coach Benjamín Paz.
Saturday’s final will be a new opportunity for Bourdet to compete against the best gymnasts in the world and continue gaining the necessary experience to arrive in the best conditions at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, where Guatemala will place great hopes in one of its most promising athletes of the new generations of national sport.
