The General Directorate of the Penitentiary System reported this Friday, May 8, that it carried out a search focused on the Matamoros detention center, zone 1.
He added that in the area where prisoners Julio Leonardo Alejandro Girón Castañeda and Carlos Leonardo Oliveros spend the night, they confiscated two cell phones, which “can no longer be used for criminal activities.”
He stated that both prisoners were detained and brought to justice.
The institution added that the diligence was led by the Elite Force of the Penitentiary System, with support from the National Civil Police and the Guatemalan Army.
Julio Leonardo Alejandro Girón Castañeda, one of the prisoners, is linked to the kidnapping of the dentist Julio Amílcar Martínez Murillo, occurred on May 28, 2025.
Girón Castañeda was transferred from the Mariscal Zavala prison to Matamoros for the use of cell phones.
Photograms presented by the Public Ministry on May 4 showed that Girón Castañeda was driving one of the three vehicles used to commit the crime against the victim.

In these images, investigators identified Girón Castañeda, who, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, had been a friend of the dentist for more than 12 years.
