American media reported on May 8 that a group of hackers had broken into different universities and school systems that use the Canvas platform to store study materialsquizzes and even exam grades.
According to CNN, universities across the United States, including Pennsylvania, Georgetown and Oklahoma, reported that students, when trying to access the Canvas digital platform, found a message placed by the hacker group identified as ShinyHunters.
This caused several universities, such as Columbia, Rutgers, Princeton, Kent State, Harvard and Georgetown, as well as school districts in California, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Oregon, Nevada, North Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsinthey will alert students through communications.
CNN indicated that this is the second computer incident recorded this May, in which the hacker group leaked student data.
The media added that Canvas has more than 30 million active users worldwide and that its parent company, Instructure, It is used by more than eight thousand institutions.
Instructure indicated on its website that Canvas is “currently under maintenance” and investigating the situation.
The first attack recorded this month occurred on May 1, when Instructure reported “an incident of cybersecurity carried out by a criminal actor.”
Although the company claimed that the situation was partially controlled, many student data were compromised, including usernames, email addresses and student identification numbers.
