Sara Curruchich has left a unique mark on the music scene by performing her songs in both Spanish and the Kaqchikel language.
According to Curruchich, his music is born from the collective and individual feelings, history, memory, culture, languages and struggles of his people, as well as from his own personal perspective as an artist.
He has released two studio albums, Are (2019) and Indigenous Woman (2021), as well as several singles with which he has captivated his audience. Additionally, she was the first Guatemalan artist to use the Kaqchikel language in popular music for an international audience.
This Friday, May 15, the national artist published I would like to bea song that has the support of Andrea Echeverri and Héctor Buitrago of the Colombian group Aterciopelados.
“Sing to name. Sing to accompany. Sing to imagine a world where childhoods are not afraid, where they are free. May this song be able to embrace a little… or a lot,” Curruchich said in a post on social networks.
Minutes after its launch, The Guatemalan artist spoke with Free press and shared details of the song, the message, its vision and the satisfaction of executing and interpreting a piece with a collective focus and a search for common well-being.
“I believe in times and in music. Now I understand it more because some songs make their own way and also decide how, when and where to go out and I would like to be It is a very beautiful song, whose intention was precisely that, through music, we could send a hug and show closeness at any time,” Curruchich said.
According to the Guatemalan artist, the song was recorded in a studio in Canada in 2025 and the musicians Karla Molkovich (bass), Sandra Moreno (marimba) and Moty (drums) participated, who currently make up her band on international tours.
“It is an acoustic song that also typically seeks to be quite close to a son, a chacarera, and of course a Kaqchikel son with which we seek to give a hug,” Curruchich added.
The collaboration of Aterciopelados
According to Sara, since the song was recorded, there was a desire to invite other artists to collaborate to join forces and bring the message to various regions of the world.
“We recorded in Montreal and we thought that it would be good that, in this song that is born from a sense of indignation, how we confront it. We want to share our indignation, yes, but we also want to look for that possibility of sharing strength, of sharing a hug. So we thought: Could it be that a band as legendary and loving as the one that Andrea and Héctor make up come together? And that was the moment to be able to get closer to them,” commented the national artist, because on previous occasions she had the opportunity to share with them and had an immediate connection.

“It was very beautiful to have an immediate response from them. They heard the song, they found out how it came about and they joined this project. For me it is very important and significant that they joined because In the songs of Aterciopelados I always found a lot of strength, a lot of clarity and a very important way to continue holding my gaze on justice, on peace and an action as well.”Sara shared.
Other collaborators
Although in the song the main voices are those of Sara Curruchich and Andrea Echeverri, there are voices like those of Héctor Buitrago and the music of the national artist that are heard and give strength to the song.
“Los Aterciopelados are artists who are quite committed and are a very big reference throughout Latin America and throughout the world as well. So his participation, his style and his energy, along with that of my companions, gave greater strength to the song, as well as Jorge Requena, who is also a composer,” Curruchich said.
The vision
According to the singer-songwriter of Kaqchikel origin, I would like to be It came about after looking at photographs of events that occurred years ago such as the separation of boys and girls from their families or the separation of entire families at the borders due to migration and for her, that collective pain, They inspired her to create a piece that works as a balm, that gives peace and can heal indignation and uncertainty with tenderness and love.
“With this song there is something that goes through us deeply and that is that things continue to happen, so that indignation and uncertainty, which many people are also feeling, also gives rise to a feeling of love, of providing support, of looking towards that reality that we are experiencing, to join in to stop this situation of injustice as well,” Curruchich added.
“Indignation exists, but it also moves us. That is our desire. And, of course, always, tenderness and love in the midst of all that, is a deeply beautiful act of life and a political act that we capture in I would like to be, the song that we published with Aterciopelados and that is available on all digital platforms”concluded the Guatemalan singer-songwriter of Kaqchikel origin.
